Lakemore Post Office Closure: Ongoing Delays Frustrate Residents
On Tuesday, May 21, an elderly man accidentally drove his car into the Lakemore Post Office, causing significant structural damage to the front of the building. The impact rendered the building unsafe for public access, leading to its immediate closure. Since then, all mail services for the 44250 zip code have been redirected to the Uniontown Post Office, an arrangement that has now been in place for over 95 days.
The situation has been a source of frustration for the residents of Lakemore, particularly those who rely on the convenience of local mail services. Initially, it was reported that the building's owners had 30 days from the date of the accident to complete repairs. However, conflicting information later surfaced, suggesting that the owners actually had 30 days from the start of the repairs to finish the work.
The building in question is not owned by the USPS but is rented from a company that owns multiple properties leased to the post office. Despite this, no significant progress was made in the first weeks following the accident. It wasn't until after local media attention and letters to state representatives that any visible action was taken.
On July 25, after numerous delays, repair work finally began, though it was soon discovered that only samples of the necessary bricks and blocks had been ordered, not the materials themselves, causing further setbacks. Despite these challenges, Representative Amelia Sykes, who was contacted by concerned residents, has indicated that the repairs should be completed by August 25.
In the meantime, the closure has posed a significant hardship for many Lakemore residents, particularly those who receive free delivery through post office boxes. The inconvenience of traveling to Uniontown for mail services has only added to the community's frustration as they await the reopening of their local post office.
