Getting to Know Springfield's Favorite Trash Man: Ryan Cunningham
We first noticed Ryan Cunningham through his posts in the Springfield Township Community Bulletin Facebook group. The overwhelmingly positive responses from the community to his stories and tips inspired us at Experience Springfield Township to share more about the person behind the posts. His impact on the community goes far beyond his job title.
Ryan Cunningham has been in the waste management industry for over seven years, beginning his career with Kimble before transitioning to Republic. Known for his people-first approach, Ryan's dedication to his job and community has made him a beloved figure in Springfield Township.
“I’m a people person,” Ryan shared. “I like to talk to people, hear their stories, and gain interest.” This desire to connect is evident in the way he goes about his work and interacts with residents.
Building Connections Through Waste Service
One of the most remarkable aspects of Ryan’s job is the relationships he’s built, including his unique friendship with Blake, a young resident with autism. Ryan first learned about Blake during his training at Republic. Blake, who collects extra trash from neighbors and takes pride in sharing his treasures, has become a highlight of Ryan’s week.
“When we pulled up to Rosemary and Blake’s house for the first time, I completely understood,” Ryan said. Blake’s joy in showing off his collected items, especially wrapping paper and pumpkin trash bags, is contagious. Ryan texts Blake’s mother, Rosemary, each Thursday to let them know he’s on his way. “Some days, Blake is out of the house waiting by the cans before he even has a coat on,” Ryan recounted. Their bond has grown to include thoughtful exchanges, like Blake gifting Ryan toy trash trucks from Goodwill. “Blake is probably the coolest, most sincere, real person I’ve ever known,” Ryan said. “We’re all blessed to have him in this township.”
Pride in Springfield Township
Ryan’s work extends beyond just collecting waste—he takes immense pride in keeping Springfield Township clean. “As a waste collector, you take pride in the area you’re collecting in,” he explained. His role allows him to engage with residents regularly, forming connections with people walking their dogs or jogging.
He enjoys the challenges of his job, including optimizing his routes to improve efficiency. “I wouldn’t pick another township if I had to,” Ryan said. His enthusiasm and commitment to maintaining the township’s cleanliness have made a lasting impact.
Tips for a Smooth Process
Ryan often shares practical advice with residents to make waste collection more efficient:
Face the cans toward the road: Handles should face the house and lids should face the street to ensure trash stays contained when tipped by the truck.
Space the cans 12 to 24 inches apart: This allows the truck’s claw to grab them more easily.
Fill the cans efficiently: Put as much trash as possible inside the can to minimize loose bags on the ground.
“When you set out your waste, think about whether this is how you’d like to pick it up,” Ryan advised. By following these tips, residents can help keep the township beautiful and make the process smoother for everyone.
Beyond the Job
Ryan’s life outside work is just as full. An avid motorcyclist, he enjoys taking out his new Harley, often accompanied by his wife. He’s also a proud father of three and has recently opened an event venue at his home. The venue, Cross Wind Meadows, is a beautifully restored rustic barn, that hosts weddings, parties, and other celebrations, adding another layer to Ryan’s connection with his community. A Message to Springfield Township
Ryan hopes residents recognize the importance of safety around waste collection vehicles. “People need to slow down and think about our lives. Despite what some people think, we’re just like you. We have families and lives,” he said.
His dedication to his work, his family, and his community embodies the spirit of Springfield Township. “Stay beautiful, Springfield,” Ryan concluded. “We can all do that together.”
