Bald Eagles Soaring To Springfield Township
Bald Eagles Soaring To Springfield Township
Nature photography has always been popular in Springfield Township, however, recently local photographers have been getting a special surprise. Bald Eagles have started making their way back to Springfield Township. These birds caught the eye of local Carol Letosky, who shares how her experience with eagles has changed her.
Carol Letosky has taken advantage of this new migration and has been able to capture some beautiful shots with her husband. She states, “We moved here four years ago, and people are saying near the lake that let me on their property to photograph that they only started seeing them two years ago! They have been making a comeback since the seventies. They are everywhere- even have a pair down in the valley, saw two flying around in Richfield and I think I saw a post where there is a nest in Hudson!” Letosky, 63, had never witnessed an eagle in the wild until she went to Springfield Lake.
Letosky says, “after we started seeing Eagles at the river, we bought a camera and started photographing the eagles, and the migrating birds and ducks that most people don’t get to see, I’m 63, and have never seen an eagle in the wild! I took a trip to Springfield lake last year and realized the eagles we were seeing on the river were coming from the lake!”
Within the state of Ohio, new studies report a shift in our eagle climate. “Ohio’s bald eagle population continues to grow with an estimated 110 new nesting sites added to the count since the last statewide bald eagle census was conducted in 2020. The 2020 census placed the total number of nests – most of them active - at 707 across 85 of 88 counties. But the state’s Division of Wildlife recently calculated an increase to 817 based on various factors that include reproductive success rates and the maturing of young eagles to breeding age.”
The beautiful town of Springfield hosts an array of different species, now adding the growing number of eagles to the list. Locals and tourists are captivated by the sighting of the birds. A tourist on vacation from Florida shared, “To see our country's symbolic bird flying was like nothing I have ever experienced. I am so grateful we stopped in Springfield for lunch and got to drive to the lake. The eagles were captivating; definitely coming back soon!”
