Citizens Urge Township Trustees to Reduce Community Center Rental Rates

A few weeks ago, we were approached to address a growing concern: the rising rental costs of the Center On The Lake and their impact on Springfield Township citizens. To better understand the community's perspective, we conducted a poll in the Springfield Township Community Bulletin Facebook group. The response was overwhelming—540 votes were cast, and a significant 70% of respondents agreed that the facility's rental rates are too high for most residents to afford.

The Problem

The Center On The Lake, a beloved community hub, is becoming increasingly out of reach due to steep rental fees. These costs include:

  • $750 for an entire day

  • $125 per hour, with a three-hour minimum

When compared to similar facilities in the region, it’s clear that the rates at the Center On The Lake are disproportionately high:

Such pricing makes it nearly impossible for many Springfield Township citizens to utilize this vital space for family gatherings, celebrations, or community events. This has led to the unfortunate reality that a facility designed for public use is now inaccessible to the very community it was meant to serve.

Why This Matters

Community spaces like the Center On The Lake are more than just buildings—they are essential resources for fostering local engagement, encouraging socialization, and enhancing overall well-being. Studies by the Public Spaces Research Group highlight the importance of affordable, accessible community spaces in strengthening connections among citizens and creating a sense of belonging.

When citizens are priced out of these spaces, we lose opportunities to come together for celebrations, discussions, and initiatives that strengthen our community’s fabric. Families seeking affordable venues for events, organizations hosting outreach programs, and residents looking for a central space to engage with neighbors are all left without options.

A Look Back: History of the Center On The Lake

The Center On The Lake wasn’t always a rental facility. Originally known as the Boyd Esler facility, it served as a place where seniors could participate in programs and enjoy meals during the day. While it has evolved into a broader community center, it still plays an essential role in providing services for seniors, including meal programs.

Over the years, significant contributions have shaped the facility's role in Springfield Township:

  • Dean Young, a past trustee, worked to ensure the facility served the needs of the community.

  • Trustee Kellie Chapman spearheaded the idea for its renovation, envisioning a vibrant, multi-use space where residents could gather, connect, and celebrate.

This rich history shows that the Center On The Lake has always been intended as a resource for everyone—a place where Springfield Township residents of all ages can come together.

What We’re Asking

We believe that the Center On The Lake should remain true to its purpose: a space that serves all Springfield Township citizens. Currently, its rental rates create barriers that limit access and hinder its role as a community hub.

We respectfully call on the Trustees to:

  1. Reevaluate the rental pricing structure to ensure affordability for all residents.

  2. Prioritize community engagement and access over maximizing rental revenue.

This isn’t just about reducing costs—it’s about restoring the Center On The Lake to its rightful place as a cornerstone of our community.
