Paws For A Cause: Empowering Students To Transform Lives

Story Written By: Mrs. Phillips and her Jr. High Newspaper Club

For our junior high student council's service project, "Paws for a Cause," the students have chosen to raise funds for Lakemore Dogs Homeward Bound, a local animal rescue organization. The primary goal is to provide outdoor runs with a protective roof to shield the dogs from the elements and provide more fencing to enhance their living conditions. Students will also work diligently to purchase and collect donations of essential items, such as storage units, blankets, beds, and food. The learning outcomes for students are deeply embedded in the experience of running a small business by creating and selling school memorabilia, such as bag tags, T-shirts, pencil cases, baseball caps, and T-shirts all uniquely designed by the students themselves.

Small actions can truly make a big impact. This initiative encourages students to channel their creativity and passion towards benefiting a cause that resonates with them, with a focus on community service and fundraising. Our project incorporates hands-on learning with the use of a Cricut machine and heat press, connecting students with real-world applications of design and manufacturing. This engagement fosters creativity, teamwork, and project management skills. Furthermore, the fundraising efforts will teach students valuable lessons in entrepreneurship and community service. The proceeds from "Paws for a Cause" will directly benefit Lakemore Dogs Homeward Bound, addressing their immediate needs and contributing to the well-being of the animals they care for. This project not only supports a worthy cause but also provides a holistic learning experience that goes beyond the classroom, instilling a sense of responsibility and empathy in our students as they actively contribute to the betterment of our community.
