An Interview with Joe Legnasky: The Heart of Akron BMX Track

In an engaging conversation with Joe Legnasky, we learned about the rich history and vibrant community surrounding Akron BMX, which has been a staple since 1984. Joes shared insights into the track's operations and upcoming events, emphasizing its role as a family-oriented attraction.

Q: How has the BMX track evolved since its inception in 1984?

Joe: "Our track has grown significantly over the years. We average about 130 riders twice a week during the summer, specifically on Thursdays and Sundays. As school starts, we transition to just Sunday races, along with a few Saturday events. It’s wonderful to see families and riders of all ages coming together."

Q: What opportunities do you provide for younger riders?

Joe: "We’re proud to offer a balance bike track for our youngest riders, from 18 months to 5 years old. It’s a safe space for them to learn and race, fostering a love for BMX from a young age. Our main track accommodates riders from age 3 all the way to those over 60, making it a truly inclusive environment."

Q: How can someone get involved with the BMX community?

Joe: "Getting involved is easy! We offer a free one-day membership for newcomers to try out the sport. If they enjoy it, a full year membership is only $80, which grants access to any USABMX sanctioned track across the U.S. and Canada. Plus, we have loaner bikes and helmets available for just $10."

Q: What makes your track special to the community?

Joe: "We pride ourselves on being a family-oriented attraction where everyone can participate. Our track operates purely on a volunteer basis, and as a non-profit, we focus on creating a welcoming atmosphere for families to bond and create lasting memories together."

Joe’s passion for BMX and his dedication to the community are evident. As the Halloween race weekend approaches, the excitement continues to build, and the track remains a hub for riders and families alike. Be sure to check out the schedule and join in the fun
