As the spring and summer seasons come into swing, Springfield Township residents are going to be outside more which means they can take full advantage of photographing the beautiful landscapes and wildlife that surrounds the area. We had the pleasure of getting some tips and tricks for aspiring nature photographers from Elise Lawrence, owner of Dana. Elise. Photography and Springfield Township resident.

When did you start doing nature photography?

It’s hard for me to answer this question because while I didn’t have a professional camera until about four years ago, I was always the friend taking photos. My room was covered with pictures and photos from magazines growing up. I always had my camera everywhere I went. Even if it was a disposable camera. Lol. But it wasn’t until about four years ago, that I had the opportunity in life to save up for a professional camera. It was something that I had dreamed about and waited for for a very long time.

Begin by capturing images of what you love. Take the time to pause, observe, and appreciate the beauty that surrounds you. This can vary greatly from person to person. Some individuals enjoy photographing people, while others find solace in capturing nature's wonders. Some are captivated by the countryside, while others find beauty in the urban landscape. Some are drawn to vibrant colors and textures, while others play with the interplay of light and shadows. Reflections and water hold a special allure for some, while others are mesmerized by the nighttime sky, the moon, and the stars. Animals become subjects of adoration for many. The list goes on. Discover something that ignites your passion and embark on the journey of practice and improvement.

I mostly taught myself by following tutorials and experimenting with my camera repeatedly. Starting with an affordable camera like the Canon Rebel can be a great choice, as it is capable of capturing remarkable images. Remember, it's more about the person behind the camera than the camera itself.

Any tricks on how to capture the best shots?

When it comes to capturing the best shots, that’s going to vary depending on what you are photographing and the feeling that you want people to have when they look at that photo. Think about the story you’re trying to tell with the photo. Crop anything else out that doesn’t contribute to that story or that feeling you’re trying to convey. I would also say learn “The Rule of Thirds.” It’s also very wise to have a good understanding of lighting. Understand, depending on the time of day you’re going to get a different type of lighting outside, and learn to work with that. So again, practice going out at different times of the day, using a subject by turning them about so you see how different shadows fall on a person’s face, or whatever it is that you’re trying to capture. Harsh afternoon lighting is very different from the warm glows of sunset lighting or what we call the “golden hour.” Many photographers love overcast because of that issue. It eliminates a lot of harsh lighting that can really washout a person or subject.

Why do you like photographing the Bog?

I think my favorite thing about the bog is the fact there are a lot of different types of grasses and flowers. The trail is open and accessible for me to get in and get close. I can take my time to really observe and see the details. I love that the Springfield Bog is a distinctive habitat. It is protecting surrounding wetlands, which is rare. They claim to have a variety of about 40 different types of prairie grasses and native plants to Ohio. I love that effort to protect wildlife habitats that are actually native to our area which helps our native species thrive.
