Sparkling Inclusion: Meet the Springfield Sparkles Inclusive Cheer Team

In the heart of Springfield Township, an inspiring story of inclusion and community spirit unfolds with the Springfield Sparkles Inclusive Cheer Team. Founded during the 2009-10 school year, this remarkable initiative has been spreading joy, breaking barriers, and showcasing the power of unity for over a decade. In this blog article, we'll delve into the heartwarming journey of the Springfield Sparkles and discover how they've become an integral part of the Springfield community.

The Birth of Sparkling Inclusion

The story of the Springfield Sparkles began with a spark of inspiration. During the summer of 2009, the high school cheerleading director stumbled upon an article about "The Sparkle Effect Organization." This organization, initiated by two high school cheerleaders in Iowa, aimed to involve individuals with special needs in school-related sports and activities. Inspired by their mission, the idea to create an inclusive cheer team took root in Springfield Township, Ohio.

The Springfield Sparkles became the first team in Ohio and the 15th in the nation to join The Sparkle Effect movement. This journey started with five special education students and fifteen typically developing cheerleaders. To be a part of the Sparkle Family, students must be enrolled in the Springfield Local school district and receive special education services. The program welcomes students from kindergarten up to the age of 22 (as permitted by Ohio state regulations) and is open to both boys and girls.

The team holds weekly practices where the high school cheerleaders play a crucial role in training Sparkle team members, adapting cheer material to ensure everyone's success. The heartwarming result? A united cheerleading squad that cheers together at all home football and basketball games, proving that inclusion knows no bounds.

The Foundation of Support

The Springfield Sparkles' journey would not have been possible without the unwavering support of the Springfield Township community. From the start, Athletic Director Kevin Vaughn and Principal Cynthia Frola embraced the idea wholeheartedly, and this support continues today. The team is grateful for the backing of Springfield's educators, coaches, administrators, police, and fire departments.

The Sparkle members are not only cheerleaders but also community enthusiasts who enjoy participating in local events like Friday night summer concerts, where they can often be spotted dancing and singing, spreading their infectious energy.

How Can the Community Support the Sparkles?

The Springfield Sparkles cherish the community's support over the past 14 years and are eager to see it continue. They welcome additional members and invite the community to help spread the word about their inclusive cheer program. If you ever need a group to perform for a special event, don't forget about your Springfield Sparkles—they are always ready to share their spirit and enthusiasm.

They appreciate the dedication of educators, volunteers, and the commitment of the local police and fire departments to ensure safety. The Sparkles also enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of community events, particularly the Friday night summer concerts.
